Commenting on the deliveries of Leopard 1, the expert stated that these machines are still usable despite their inadequate armor and lower shooting accuracy compared to more modern tanks.
According to him, restoring their combat readiness can take anywhere from several months to nine months.
“This is due to the lack of production chains. There are no facilities, no workforce and no spare parts,” he said.
At the same time, he answered affirmatively when asked if one could “ironically say that the West is supplying scrap metal to Ukraine.”
“If we speak ironically, then yes. We have old equipment that needs to be used correctly to be useful. If it is used incorrectly, old equipment will quickly become scrap metal in Ukraine,” he emphasized.
Tile added that even modern equipment can turn into scrap metal when used improperly.
At the end of August, the German Ministry of Defense announced the delivery of ten Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine. Prior to this, the German defense company Rheinmetall acquired 50 Leopard 1 tanks from Belgium, 30 of which are intended for transfer to Kiev.
Leopard 1 was the main battle tank produced in Germany from 1965 to 1984. Until the mid-1980s, it was in service with the Bundeswehr and the armies of the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Australia and Italy.
