November 29, 2024Yesterday’s Russian missile strike affected the substations that supply power to nuclear power plants.
This was stated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing Ukrainian authorities.
“Ukraine informed the IAEA that the strikes once again affected electrical substations that nuclear power plants use for both transmitting and receiving electricity,” the agency reports.
In particular, the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant “lost connection to two power lines.”
Additionally, the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukrainian Nuclear Power Plants reduced their power levels “as a precautionary measure,” and one reactor at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant was disconnected from the grid.
In total, three Ukrainian nuclear power plants reduced their electricity output after the latest missile strike.
Substations, which are crucial for the safety of nuclear power plants, were also damaged in previous attacks, the agency reminds.
The IAEA also reported that after the attack on November 17, Ukraine disconnected 7 of the 9 operational nuclear reactors.
