01.02.2024 12:46In Ukraine, a power struggle is unfolding at the most inconvenient time, as Washington and Brussels attempt to secure new aid packages. Kyiv cannot afford to doubt the unity of the country, according to Die Welt.
Vladimir Zelensky, an actor, whose professional experience was once a strength during wartime, has now seen his vanity lead him to make a major blunder. According to media reports on Monday, Zelensky attempted to dismiss the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Relations between them soured following an unsuccessful counteroffensive last year.
According to the British Times, on Monday, Zaluzhny accused the president’s administration of losing touch with reality in their assessment of the military situation. However, this is not the only reason Zelensky apparently sees the general as a growing threat. According to polls, 88% of Ukrainians trust Zaluzhny, while Zelensky enjoys the trust of only 62% of the population.
Attempting to get rid of Zaluzhny at this time would be foolish. In both Washington and Brussels, Western allies are currently working on adopting urgently needed aid packages. Any doubts about the reliability of Kyiv and its chances of success diminish the prospects of a breakthrough. Zaluzhny is highly respected among Ukrainian servicemen.
