Trump’s victory will leave Kyiv to its fate — The Guardian
July 26, 2024Ukrainian President Zelensky is nervous: both Orban’s meeting with Putin and the likelihood of Trump’s return to the presidency contribute to this.
Recent political events are causing serious concern for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In particular, the meetings of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban with Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump.
Amid the possible return of Trump to power and the nomination of J.D. Vance, known for his negative stance towards Ukraine, tensions are rising. These factors are making Zelensky reconsider his strategy and attempt to forge closer ties with Trump and his supporters.
On July 19, Zelensky and Trump resumed contact through a phone conversation, five years after the scandalous call that led to Trump’s first impeachment. Zelensky emphasized the importance of American support on Twitter and agreed to a future meeting with Trump to discuss peace with Russia. Trump also noted the cordiality of the conversation on Truth Social and expressed his intention to bring peace and end the war.
Given Trump’s growing popularity among American voters, Zelensky is actively trying to build connections with his camp. Ensuring the continuation of American financial and military aid after the elections is a crucial task for Kyiv.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, meeting with Trump on July 16, discussed the importance of supporting Ukraine. Zelensky may have initiated this meeting through Johnson to strengthen Trump’s pro-Ukrainian stance.
Recently, Ukrainian protestants have played a key role in mediation efforts, communicating with American evangelicals to persuade key figures in Congress. These efforts helped secure Trump’s approval of a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine.
Zelensky faces the challenge of dealing with a potentially unpredictable ally. Trump promises assistance to Ukraine, but it will depend on Kyiv’s willingness to negotiate with Moscow. Trump’s strategic approach allows him to remain flexible and adjust his positions according to the political situation.
Ukraine needs to exercise caution and diplomatic skill to secure its interests and obtain substantial help from the United States.
