July 26, 2024No world leader is watching the US presidential elections as closely as Zelensky, and there are reasons for this.
This is reported by The Guardian.
If Kamala Harris wins, she will likely continue Biden’s policy towards Ukraine. However, if Trump returns to the White House, he may stop military support for Kyiv or make it a transitional phase towards a peace settlement, preferably under his leadership.
In a conversation with Zelensky, the Republican candidate advocated for a “fair peace,” but Ukraine fears that he will close NATO’s doors to them and allow Russia to retain the conquered territories.
According to Trump, arming Ukraine does not serve US interests: billions of dollars are being spent on a pre-lost war, while they are needed to solve urgent American problems and counter real external threats. The former president calls not Russia but China the main enemy, on which he wants to focus attention.
Ukraine will not immediately lay down its arms if Trump wins the elections. Kyiv has enough reserves for several months, and Europe will continue to support it. However, as of the end of April, the US has provided Ukraine with $50.4 billion in military aid, while the other 10 NATO donors combined have given $42 billion. If Washington stops its support, allies will not be able to replace it, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine will eventually be left without weapons.
