Former Prime Minister of Ukraine spoke of possible pressure by Trump on Zelensky over Donbas
14.08.2025 - 11:02Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised to go after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) following a scandal over an investigation into his subordinate, former Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov.
This was reported by the Financial Times, citing Ukrainian officials.
The publication notes that too many people close to Zelensky have been caught up in criminal investigations. Sources told the paper that the president promised to protect Chernyshov, who at the time was abroad, from prosecution. Some added that Zelensky was prepared to go even further.
Financial Times pointed out that after the scandal over Zelensky’s attempt to pass a law restricting the activities of anti-corruption bodies, his reputation was undermined, as was his image as a fighter against corruption.
Earlier, The Economist, citing a senior source in one of Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, reported that NABU’s investigative activities could influence the election campaign, which is expected to begin after the conflict is resolved. According to journalists, “storm clouds” are looming over Ukraine’s domestic politics.
