August 8, 2024Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has submitted a bill to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine regarding multiple citizenships.
The bill, besides establishing permissible cases of multiple citizenship, defines the grounds for the loss of Ukrainian citizenship. Specifically, it addresses the voluntary acquisition of Russian citizenship.
This winter, Zelensky had already submitted a similar bill, which was supported by the Rada’s Committee on Human Rights, De-occupation, and Reintegration of Occupied Territories in February.
The winter bill outlined the states whose citizens could acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified process, the categories of individuals who would be required to renounce their foreign citizenship to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, and introduced a declaration of self-recognition as a citizen of Ukraine.
