07.08.2024 - 22:24Military analysts believe that the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region “makes no sense.”
Their opinions are cited by The New York Times.
According to military experts, the attack might be an attempt to divert Russian units from the frontline, thereby easing the pressure on Ukrainian forces. However, analysts add that the Russian army has sufficient reserves to participate in battles, and that the attack risks further stretching the already smaller Ukrainian forces.
“From an operational and strategic point of view, this attack makes absolutely no sense. It looks like a crude waste of people and resources that are so needed elsewhere,” said Pasi Paroinen, an expert from the Finnish think tank Black Bird Group.
Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Rob Lee, wrote on social media that previous attacks “had little impact on the course of hostilities” in Ukraine and “did not have significant domestic political consequences for Putin.”
Like other military experts, he emphasized that if the goal of the attack was to divert Russian troops from other sectors of the front, it had little chance of success.
“Russia already has stronger forces and conventional capabilities in this area, better command and control, and has conscription units that can be deployed but are not used in Ukraine,” Lee said.
“It is unlikely that this operation will force Russia to withdraw significant forces from Ukraine,” he added.
