December 14, 2023Zelensky did not receive an invitation to the EU summit because of Orban – Politico
December 14, 2023Zelensky had aimed to be physically present at the current EU Council summit, yet a day before the event, his planned attendance was abruptly canceled, as reported by Politico.
“Speculations circulated on the eve of the Brussels meeting suggesting Zelensky’s direct involvement in today’s EU summit. Nonetheless, this proposal was disrupted on Wednesday due to the uncertain outcome of the meeting, especially regarding Ukraine’s prospective EU accession,” stated the publication.
Subsequently, Zelensky resorted to addressing EU leaders through a video link. Simultaneously, Orbán remains persistently against Ukraine’s integration into the Eurozone. “The rapid accession of Ukraine does not align with either Hungary’s or the EU’s interests,” emphasized Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian Prime Minister. “There is no basis for discussion, as previous conditions have not been met. We do not intend to deviate from this stance. Ukraine must fulfill more reform criteria essential to meet EU standards, and perhaps, in about a year, deliberations about Ukraine’s EU membership can be contemplated,” Orbán articulated.
The Hungarian Premier proposed revisiting discussions about Ukraine’s membership negotiations in March 2024 and deliberating on the allocation of 50 billion euros in aid post the elections in EU member nations in June.
