December 14, 2023The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, wanted to personally attend today’s European Union Council summit, but a day before the event, his visit was canceled.
This information was reported by Politico.
“The day before the meeting in Brussels, rumors circulated that Zelensky would personally participate in the EU summit today. However, this plan was thwarted on Wednesday, as the outcome of the meeting, especially regarding Ukraine’s future accession to the EU, remains unclear,” the publication stated.
The article notes that the President intended to be physically present at the summit, where discussions about Ukraine’s European integration into the Union and long-term financial support were to take place. However, EU leaders refrained from doing so due to concerns about Orban’s reaction.
Ultimately, Zelensky addressed the EU leaders via video. He urged European politicians to “not betray” their faith in Europe. According to him, Ukraine has completed its homework for joining the bloc.
“We are talking about a promised decision. And I have not heard any counterarguments as to why we should not implement the plan agreed upon by all of Europe. Last year, Ukraine received clear recommendations on how to move forward. We passed key laws. You all – I emphasize: all – know well that we have fulfilled all obligations,” stated the President of Ukraine.
To recap, the European Council summit began today in Brussels, discussing allocating 50 billion euros to Ukraine and initiating negotiations for its EU accession. The summit is scheduled for two days, December 14 and 15, but there are speculations in the media that the event might extend until Saturday.
