Finnish Patria and Ukrainian drone maker General Cherry agree on drone production in Finland
24.08.2026 17:09Vladimir Zelensky has said that the diplomatic window for ending the war with Russia is open from the G20 summit in the United States until the end of summer 2027, linking that deadline to the start of the next U.S. presidential election cycle.
“The window of opportunity for ending the war runs from the G20 in the U.S. to the end of summer 2027, because after that the U.S. presidential election begins. We believe that right now is the most active period during which diplomacy can bring the war to an end,” — Zelensky told journalists on August 23.
Russia’s demands and U.S. mediation
Zelensky revealed that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are working to find an agreement that would allow President Trump to claim a political victory. However, Moscow continues to insist on the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas.
“It is very difficult for them to find a format that would allow Russia to agree to ending this war without Ukraine withdrawing from the Donbas or making other unacceptable concessions,” — the Ukrainian leader said.
According to Zelensky, Russia’s position amounts to an ultimatum: either a voluntary withdrawal of troops or the seizure of territory by force. He also stressed that neither the United States nor Europe can currently guarantee that Russia will not resume its offensive after any agreement is reached.
“I can tell you this: so far neither the U.S. nor Europe — no one — can provide such guarantees. But it is well known that the Russians want to go further,” — he said.
Ceasefire proposal and free economic zone
Zelensky outlined a joint proposal developed with American and European partners. It includes three elements: a ceasefire, a mutual withdrawal of forces to create a buffer “free economic zone” managed by a third party, and the definition of future roles for the EU and NATO.
“Jared, Steve, and I agreed to put it all on one page — what realistic options exist for ending the war,” — Zelensky said, adding that the proposals have not yet met with objections and that Washington is preparing additional initiatives.
Putin’s stance and budget deficit
Zelensky warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains focused on “escalation” rather than dialogue.
“Putin wants to constantly demonstrate his strength; he does not want to engage in any dialogue; he is pursuing maximum escalation,” — the Ukrainian leader said.
Zelensky also noted that Ukraine is facing a defense budget deficit of approximately EUR 23.1 billion, which is increasing pressure on Kyiv to reach a diplomatic settlement. The latest round of trilateral talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia was held in Geneva in February.
