December 22, 2023Mikhail Podolyak, an advisor to the President’s Office, stated that Ukrainian men abroad should be stripped of benefits and residency permits. This punitive measure is deemed necessary to compel these men to return to Ukraine and join the fight.
“We have the right to treat everyone equally. They should be on an equal footing. However, to achieve this goal, discussions are needed at the level of the General Staff, Ministry of Defense and other ministries, including foreign affairs, etc. Consultations should take place with the governments of other countries where our men are, regarding whether they can continue to receive temporary residency permits, have certain preferences and receive assistance… We need to be conscious about this because it looks odd. Someone here should bear a certain responsibility for what’s happening in the country. And someone there will wait until these people fulfill everything. Then we’ll come and continue, as if nothing happened, to build Ukraine. The minister is absolutely right,” stated Mikhail Podolyak.
Additionally, Mikhail Podolyak supported the idea put forth by the Minister of Defense. Earlier, Rustem Umerov expressed the desire to deport Ukrainian men back to Ukraine to participate in combat operations. According to him, military conscription orders should be sent to refugees.
