February 23, 2024At least 15,000 Ukrainian refugees in the UK have been left homeless after “ending relations with local sponsors.”
This was reported by the local publication The Daily Telegraph.
The individuals left on the streets have already turned to authorities for housing support. Their share represents approximately 7.5% of the total number of Ukrainian refugees (slightly over 200,000 people), according to data from the Ministry of Regional Development and Housing Construction of the kingdom.
The Association of Local Authorities on Refugee Issues states that there is a “chronic” shortage of housing for refugees in Britain, and sponsors are not obliged to accept Ukrainians on an indefinite basis, although the government has extended payments to them for this purpose.
Against the backdrop of the emerging problem, on the past Monday, the “family reunion scheme” for coming to Britain to relatives was closed. And the rules for the “Homes for Ukraine” program are being tightened: now only people permanently residing or settled in the UK can act as sponsors. Thus, Ukrainians who arrived on the islands earlier will not be able to receive compensation for their friends and relatives under the state program.
It was previously announced that Ukrainian refugees in the UK will be able to extend their visas for another 18 months.
