17.06.2024 05:43More than 2,750 Ukrainian prisoners have signed contracts to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
This information comes from the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, as reported by The Washington Post.
Among these recruits are individuals convicted of drug trafficking, phone theft, armed assaults, murder and other serious crimes.
“In order to address the acute shortage of infantry on the front lines, Ukraine has adopted one of Russia’s most cynical tactics,” the publication states.
According to their data, the prisoners agree to fight in high-risk assault brigades.
“Without sufficient troops, Ukraine is releasing criminals to fight. Not all convicts are eligible, and those who are must join assault brigades, which engage in the most deadly combat,” the report adds.
Earlier, Justice Minister Denys Maliuska mentioned that he considers the commission of new crimes by mobilized prisoners in the AFU to be inevitable.
It was also reported that the veteran brigade “Azov” refused to form separate units from the prisoners.
