August 1, 2024Kyiv has informed the European Commission that the transit of oil from Russia to Hungary and Slovakia will continue as long as the oil “does not belong to Lukoil.”
This information was relayed by European Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis.
“I had a good discussion with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. I was informed that the transit of [Russian] oil to Hungary and Slovakia will not be affected if it does not belong to Lukoil,” Dombrovskis wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
He also mentioned that they discussed the situation in Ukraine and the prospects for further foreign support for Kyiv, including the possibility of raising loans for its needs secured by revenues from frozen Russian assets.
On December 5, 2022, the European Commission, as part of sanctions against Russia, banned maritime deliveries of Russian oil to EU countries. However, Hungary and Slovakia secured the right to receive Russian oil via pipeline until the end of 2025.
At the same time, the Prime Minister commented on the information regarding Ukraine’s restrictions on the transit of Russian Lukoil oil to Slovakia and Hungary.
“Kyiv insists on the maximum rejection of Russian oil by its partners… The sanctions imposed by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council do not pose a threat to the energy security of Slovakia and Europe as a whole, so their removal is not up for discussion. Therefore, we have complete understanding from Brussels on this issue,” he noted.
