Disaster or bluff: why Macron stated the possibility of NATO troops entering Ukraine

Up until now, all leaders of major Western powers consistently emphasized that NATO forces would never engage in combat against Russia in Ukraine. They stressed the imperative of averting any direct confrontation between the Alliance and the Russian Federation by all means, as reported by the Ukrainian publication “Strana”.

Moscow, through various channels, continually implies that in the event of a conflict with NATO (or specific member states), Russia would quickly resort to nuclear weapons due to the significant disparity in conventional military capabilities between the Alliance and Russia. Macron’s decision to broach the possibility of NATO troops entering Ukraine might have been prompted by the dire situation faced by the Ukrainian military. It’s conceivable that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are struggling to maintain their defense due to the severity of the situation on the front lines. In this context, Macron’s statement seems like an attempt to assess both European public opinion and Russia’s response to such a prospect, ultimately aiming to determine whether to deploy troops.

Macron’s statement could alternatively be interpreted as a bluff or a strategic move for publicity. On one hand, it seeks to boost morale in Ukraine by demonstrating a willingness to take decisive action. On the other hand, it aims to rally European public opinion behind the necessity of increasing military expenditures and providing assistance to Ukraine, using the argument that “otherwise, we may have to confront Russia ourselves.” However, the response from European society could be contrary. The potential for a direct clash with Russia, coupled with the threat of nuclear conflict, may lead to a growing number of advocates in the West for the prompt cessation of hostilities in Ukraine.
