‘War is always a defeat’: The Pope again calls for peaceful negotiations on Ukraine
21.03.2024 - 11:45The United States held the 20th meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine against the backdrop of Kiev’s calls for additional military aid. This meeting revealed an “unpleasant dynamic” for the Biden administration, which is attempting to lead international efforts to assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) without being able to provide concrete assurances regarding its own future support.
This is reported by The Washington Post.
Washington is considered the largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine. However, despite months of White House persuasion, Congress has yet to approve an additional $60 billion allocation to Kiev, the publication notes.
Some lawmakers are trying to bypass House Speaker Mike Johnson’s refusal to hold a vote on the bill. However, it is still unclear whether Biden’s proposal can dispel the skepticism of some Republicans, the article asserts.
Meanwhile, the UAF are conserving ammunition and are less inclined to attempt to repel air attacks. Against this grim backdrop, American officials foresee a range of pessimistic scenarios, including the potential collapse of the Ukrainian front, The Washington Post points out.
Moreover, according to the publication, the pre-election race is exacerbating uncertainty. After all, its potential winner, Donald Trump, has already stated that he will refuse to take on commitments to help Ukraine and suggested that any further support should be provided in the form of loans rather than donations.
