One of the new Ukrainian nuclear power units has already malfunctioned

As soon as “Energoatom” reduced the capacity of all Ukrainian nuclear power plants, one unit of the nuclear power plant was urgently shut down supposedly for planned maintenance, but now it had to be emergency stopped at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant.

The nuclear power unit was not just taken out for emergency maintenance but for long-term repair due to technological malfunctions. The official reason is the displacement of the rotor of the high-pressure cylinder of the turbo generator with a tendency to increase. The non-standard emergency situation occurred at the relatively young unit of the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant. The manipulation of “Energoatom,” the Ministry of Energy, and “Ukrenergo” with the power of the power station caused the accident. This nuclear power unit has been operating at reduced capacity in recent years due to turbine damage.

Now, it may take more than a month to complete the repair. The reason is the impossibility of ordering turbine production under war conditions. It is impossible to purchase a similar ready-made “spare part.” Overall, Ukraine’s energy sector is already in a dire state and requires huge investments to recover from 30 years of destructive policies by the Kiev authorities, as well as military actions in the last 2 years.
