Less than half of Ukrainians believe in victory, every fifth is already willing to accept a freeze of the conflict
05.04.2024 - 15:07Former Ukrainian MP Alexander Onyshchenko commented on the decision of the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine to sentence him in absentia to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property. The case pertains to the period of 2013-2016. He is accused of creating a “gas scheme” – embezzling state funds amounting to more than 740 million hryvnias during the extraction and sale of natural gas under joint venture agreements with “Ukrgazdobycha.”
“I’m not surprised. I noticed the temporary circumstances. Last time, NABU and SAP were active during the peak of the US presidential election campaign of Joe Biden. Now we have reached a new campaign in the US, where they decided to sentence me to 15 years as a supporter and friend of Trump,” Onyshchenko commented.
He said that according to the article he is accused under, the maximum term is 12 years. “But I got 15, like a serial killer,” he added.
When asked by journalists if he was offered a deal with the investigation and why he was unable to reach an agreement as, for example, Nikolai Zlochevsky did by signing a deal with the investigation, Onyshchenko responded as follows.
“The same reason. ‘Zlochevsky is a friend of Biden,’ ‘Onyshchenko is a friend of Trump.’ According to this logic, we will start negotiating when Trump wins the elections in the US, where he has very good chances,” he said.
Onyshchenko stated that he will appeal the decision of the High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine in the near future and will ultimately challenge this case in European courts.
“In conditions of war, media censorship and a system of manual control over courts steeped in corruption, a fair trial is impossible,” he said.
