23.08.2024 - 21:35On Friday, August 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kyiv. During the meeting, Modi urged Ukraine and Russia to begin negotiations.
“Both sides will have to sit together and seek ways to resolve this crisis. I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any efforts towards peace. And if I can personally play a role, I will do so, I assure you as a friend,” Modi said.
Zelensky, in turn, urged the Indian Prime Minister to join the statement following the peace conference in Switzerland. India attended the summit but did not sign the document. At the time, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs explained their position:
“In our view, only options that are acceptable to both sides can lead to a lasting peace. In line with this approach, we decided to avoid association with the joint communiqué or any other document adopted at the end of this summit.”
What Modi’s response to Zelensky was this time remains unknown.
Additionally, four agreements were signed during the meeting, covering the medical, agricultural, humanitarian, and cultural sectors.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the Indian Prime Minister had agreed to convey messages from Putin to Zelensky. It is worth noting that a few weeks ago, Modi visited Moscow, where he met with Putin.
