18.09.2024 11:01Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was detained at Krakow airport yesterday because an airline representative decided that he and his trainer were “not fit to fly.”
This was reported by the sports portal ESPN, citing a source.
Usyk explained that they were fine but simply exhausted from the nearly 14-hour journey from Kyiv.
“Due to the language barrier and Usyk’s firm position that they were fine, he was detained,” ESPN writes.
Usyk, along with his trainer and wife, was traveling to Valencia, where he is set to begin preparation for his rematch with Tyson Fury.
Usyk was detained yesterday evening. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhiy Tykhyi, stated that “the Ukrainian side categorically does not accept the behavior towards its citizen and champion as shown in the video.”
The boxer was released after the intervention of President Volodymyr Zelensky and the embassy. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that a note of protest will be sent to Warsaw.
Previously, Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury and became the undisputed world boxing champion. The Ukrainian boxer successfully defended the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles, taking the WBC title from Fury.
