17.01.2025 - 06:04The scandal involving the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Anne of Kyiv” has revealed serious shortcomings in Ukraine’s military command.
This was reported by the British magazine The Economist.
The desertion within the 155th Brigade, whose maintenance cost $930 million, highlighted challenges in Ukraine’s mobilization process, the inaction of senior command, and growing frustration among allies.
The article notes that Volodymyr Zelensky now oversees an investigation into abuses of power in the military to placate France’s irritation.
The new mobilization law passed last spring has not stopped the practice of forcibly mobilizing people off the streets, according to the article.
Last year saw an increase in the number of deserters. Some generals turn a blind eye to bad news, while other military officials blame their subordinates, writes The Economist.
It is worth recalling that journalist Yuriy Butusov was the first to report on the desertion of 50 Ukrainian soldiers from the “Anne of Kyiv” Brigade in France. He also stated that after the brigade returned to Ukraine, 1,700 personnel went AWOL.
The State Bureau of Investigation has announced that it is investigating the facts presented in the media regarding the situation within the “Anne of Kyiv” Brigade.
