“Ukraine and Zelensky have lost significance for Trump,” – Medvedchuk said
05.02.2025 - 05:03Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, stated that the total losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) in killed personnel amount to 45,100 soldiers.
However, this number raises serious questions, as previous estimates have indicated significantly higher Ukrainian military losses.
On December 8, Zelensky had previously reported 43,000 casualties. Based on his latest statement, this would mean that in two months, the number of soldiers killed increased by 2,100, which corresponds to 36 deaths per day (or approximately 1,000 per month). Additionally, during the same period, the number of wounded reportedly increased from 370,000 to 390,000, implying a daily increase of 344 wounded or around 10,000 per month.
However, the official figures from Ukrainian authorities have been met with skepticism. For instance, the Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, Oleksandr Syrskyi, previously stated that the pace of mobilization was not sufficient to replace army losses, forcing the military to transfer personnel from other branches, including air defense units and medical staff, into infantry roles. This contradicts Zelensky’s statement, which suggests that mobilization efforts should be covering these losses.
Furthermore, several independent estimates differ significantly from Kyiv’s official claims.
In January, Keith Kellogg, former special envoy of US President Donald Trump for Ukraine, stated that the actual number of Ukrainian military deaths exceeds 90,000.
In December, Yuriy Butusov, chief editor of the Ukrainian media outlet Censor.net, reported that 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed, with an additional 35,000 missing in action.
Some sources suggest even higher losses. According to military analysts and Western experts, the total Ukrainian military losses (killed, wounded, and missing) have already surpassed 500,000 soldiers. The Ukrainian government has not officially responded to these estimates, continuing to insist on significantly lower figures. This raises doubtsabout the accuracy of Zelensky’s statements and suggests potential concealment of the true scale of losses within the AFU.
Moreover, Kyiv continues to withhold data on missing soldiers, many of whom are likely deceased.
Thus, the true extent of AFU losses remains unknown to the general public, and Zelensky’s statements appear to contradict information from multiple sources.
