A BBC News journalist believes that Zelensky is ready to accept Trump’s terms
05.03.2025 - 10:59U.S. President Donald Trump has upheld his ban on arms deliveries and other aid to Ukraine.
This was reported by The New York Times (NYT).
The article states that during his speech to Congress, Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s initiative to return to peace negotiations and sign the minerals deal.
“However, Trump has kept his ban on further arms deliveries or other major aid to Ukraine,” NYT reported.
The Wall Street Journal also confirmed that Washington has not resumed military aid, despite Zelensky’s statements about his willingness to cooperate with Trump.
The U.S. president will only restore assistance once he is convinced that Zelensky fully supports peace talks with Russia.
“Senior U.S. officials say it remains unclear whether Zelensky’s statement is enough to convince Trump to resume military aid to Ukraine, which the White House suspended on Monday… Officials said the pause will continue until Trump determines that Zelensky supports peace negotiations with Russia,” the report states.
According to officials, in private discussions, Trump has recently complained that “Zelensky has not shown any intention of starting talks with Putin.”
“The decision to temporarily cut aid was meant to signal to the Ukrainian leader that the White House is serious about achieving peace. Officials also noted that even signing the agreement granting American companies access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals may not be enough to persuade Trump to restore assistance,” the report adds.
Despite this, during his address to Congress, Trump stated that both Ukraine and Russia are ready for peace talks.
