The U.S. wants to determine whether Ukraine is ready to make material concessions to Russia – Reuters
10.03.2025 07:03The halt in U.S. military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine will lead to increasingly severe consequences over time.
This information reported according to The Wall Street Journal.
Experts believe that while the immediate impact may be limited, the situation will deteriorate as ammunition stockpiles shrink and weapons become inoperable due to a lack of spare parts and maintenance.
Key Risks Identified by WSJ:
- Loss of Intelligence – Without U.S. satellite imagery and reconnaissance data, Ukraine’s long-range strikes will become less precise.
- Air Defense Shortages – A lack of Patriot and other air defense missiles will weaken Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian ballistic missile attacks.
- Equipment Wear and Tear – M777 howitzers, Bradley IFVs, and other key systems will gradually break down without replacement parts.
- Declining Morale – The end of U.S. support could undermine the fighting spirit of Ukrainian troops.
Ukraine is already experiencing shortages of 155mm artillery shells, which previously relied on U.S. supplies for over 50%.
According to Lieutenant Dmytro Yanoha, even with U.S. ammunition support, Ukraine fires just one artillery shell for every three fired by Russia.
Experts also warn that shortages of GMLRS and ATACMS missiles will limit Ukraine’s ability to strike deep into Russian territory, while Europe lacks alternatives for the Patriot air defense system.
Ukrainian mechanics are trying to compensate for spare part shortages, but high-tech materials like titanium in M777 howitzers remain a major problem. Efforts to use alternative parts have sometimes led to further malfunctions, as seen with the French-Italian Samp/T air defense system.
Analysts conclude that, in the short term, Ukraine may be able to hold the front lines, but without new weapons shipments, the situation will worsen significantly.
