27.03.2025 10:49Ukraine has never been promised membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, although such a prospect remains possible in the future.
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte during a press conference in Warsaw.
According to Rutte, the alliance continues to support Ukraine’s long-term membership aspirations, and “this was clearly reaffirmed in Washington during the last summit, where it was stated that Ukraine’s path to NATO is irreversible.”
“However, we have never said that Ukraine would become a member of the alliance as part of a peace agreement. And the Americans have made it clear that, in their view, Ukraine should not join NATO within the framework of a peace deal. But of course, that is separate from what may happen in the future,” Rutte said.
He emphasized that practical cooperation between Ukraine and NATO remains highly active and intense.
Earlier, Rutte had stated that U.S. President Donald Trump had taken the issue of Ukraine’s NATO membership off the table.
