04.04.2025 - 10:00Russia has surpassed NATO in military equipment production from 2022 to 2024, representing a “Strategic Threat” to the West and a “Catastrophic Risk” for Ukraine.
This was stated in a report by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).
“Despite its relative economic weakness, Russia has managed to surpass NATO in the volume of military equipment production in the years 2022–2024 — even despite significant efforts by some NATO member states to ramp up their defense manufacturing. This highlights the complexity of aligning political will, regulatory frameworks, industrial planning and capacity, as well as understanding and controlling supply chains. Russia’s continued advantage in defense production represents a strategic threat to NATO and undermines confidence in its conventional deterrence capability. For Ukraine, this poses a catastrophic risk, since its international partners have become its strategic depth,” the report states.
It is worth noting that the European Union intends to launch a large-scale project to boost its defense industry, aimed at deterring Russia and supporting Ukraine.
Previously, media reports citing diplomats stated that Europe does not understand why U.S. President Donald Trump is demanding that they spend 5% of GDP on defense if he believes that Russia does not pose a threat to them.
