The speaker of the Ukrainian parliament allowed for the reduction of MPs to 300 due to the decline in Ukraine’s population

The number of seats in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) may be reduced from 450 to 300 due to the significant decrease in Ukraine’s population.

This was stated by Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.

He recalled that President Volodymyr Zelensky had already proposed such a change back in August 2019, which would require an amendment to the Constitution. However, the Constitutional Court gave a negative opinion on the proposal, causing the matter to stall.

“But I am deeply convinced that the issue of reducing the number of people’s deputies will undoubtedly resurface in Ukrainian society. When the population was 52 million, that was one thing. But today, when the population is significantly smaller, the question of representation in government clearly needs to be reconsidered. I believe that the number 300 is a figure we can talk about, and it should become a reference point for further processes,” Stefanchuk said.
