Families of missing Ukrainian soldiers may not be eligible for payments
16.04.2025 - 14:22Likely future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expected to drop support for supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine after seeing classified information.
This was stated by Matthias Miersch, Secretary General of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), which is expected to form a coalition with the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU), according to Tagesschau. Current Chancellor Olaf Scholz is also a member of the SPD.
“I assume that once Merz is fully briefed by the relevant agencies, he will carefully reassess everything. And we will make this decision together,” Miersch said.
He also emphasized that the SPD parliamentary group already has a clear stance on the issue.
“I believe that we do not want to contribute to further escalation, that we do not want to become a party to the war. All the reasons that led us to refrain from delivering the Taurus missiles remain valid. And I expect that this position will remain unchanged,” the Secretary General added.
