02.05.2025 15:50Ukraine may take on indefinite obligations under an agreement with the United States regarding the management of its natural resources.
This was reported by Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zhelezniak, citing clarifications from Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
According to Zhelezniak, lawmakers have yet to receive access to the full text of all documents related to the agreement. Nevertheless, the Verkhovna Rada is expected to vote on its ratification as soon as May 8. The haste and lack of transparency have raised concerns among MPs and experts alike.
A particular point of concern is the fact that the managing fund, which will oversee Ukraine’s subsoil resources, is reportedly to be registered not in Ukraine but in the United States. Critics argue this could lead to a loss of sovereign control over the country’s strategic resources.
Moreover, it has emerged that the agreement does not include any provisions for security guarantees or compensation mechanisms for Ukraine in case of force majeure or geopolitical threats.
Experts and civil society representatives are already demanding that the full text of the agreement be made public and that a broad public discussion be held before parliament makes a final decision.
