19.06.2025 - 21:52Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen want to cut Europe off from Russian energy, and the issue of oil has turned into an ideological matter.
This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
“The issue of oil from Russia has become ideological. But for Hungary, it’s a matter of our physical needs. The European Union is trying to cut us off from Russian resources. To be blunt — this is von der Leyen and Zelensky’s plan. Kyiv wants to deprive Europe of affordable oil and gas from Russia. They say it’s about independence and security. But it’s all a lie,” the diplomat emphasized.
Szijjártó stressed that Budapest opposes such a policy from the European Commission, as restricting the supply of energy resources from Russia would “seriously harm the EU itself for the sake of Kyiv.”
On June 17, EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stated that the European Commission intends to completely ban member states from purchasing Russian gas by the end of 2027. He emphasized that the ban on fuel imports from Russia will apply regardless of whether the fighting in Ukraine ends.
