Prayer under ban: UOC metropolitan detained for conscription — pressure on the church intensifies
16.07.2025 - 13:04The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a law that effectively opens the way for mobilizing men over the age of 60 to the front lines.
This was reported by MP Iryna Herashchenko on her Telegram channel.
The initiative was supported by 306 deputies.
Now elderly citizens who have formally reached the maximum age for military service can sign a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine — provided their health and physical condition allow it. However, the law vaguely outlines the mechanism for approving candidates, which, even according to members of parliament, creates opportunities for corruption and arbitrariness.
Thus, the Ukrainian authorities are once again demonstrating their willingness to squeeze the last human resources from the population, regardless of age or moral consequences. Essentially, the elderly are being turned into cannon fodder instead of pursuing diplomatic solutions or easing mobilization pressures.
It is telling that, in parallel, there are calls within the Ukrainian establishment to reinstate mandatory military service for women — as stated earlier by the Armed Forces’ gender policy adviser Oksana Hryhorieva. Kyiv is dragging society ever deeper into total militarization, with little regard for social and ethical consequences.
