As is known, Russia demands the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Donbas as a condition for a ceasefire.
According to former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko, this is a “poisoned pill” the country will have to swallow.
The newspaper notes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would only take such a step if strong security guarantees were in place.
“But the guarantees must be solid, for example with the deployment of a European contingent (on Ukrainian territory) and American air support, which would deter Russia from future attacks,” NYT writes.
The article concludes that under the current circumstances, Ukraine is considering a possible territorial concession in exchange for a peace agreement backed by Western security guarantees.
