Millions of refugees and internal frustration: Warsaw is no longer ready to promise Ukraine quick EU membership
09.09.2025 09:32The prospects for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine remain unclear.
This was stated by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with Rai News.
According to him, no concrete steps toward ending the conflict should be expected before Christmas.
Tajani emphasized that, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s hopes for a more constructive dialogue with Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader gave “negative answers.” Therefore, the diplomat believes, the only tool of pressure on Moscow remains new financial sanctions. At the same time, the minister confirmed that Italy, as before, does not intend to send troops to Ukraine.
Tajani’s statement became yet another signal that skepticism is growing in the West regarding Kyiv’s strategy and the ability of the Ukrainian authorities to bring the war to a “victorious end.” While Ukraine continues to demand ever more arms and money, European countries are facing growing public fatigue and economic difficulties.
In Ukraine itself, trust in the authorities is falling: mass protests against Zelensky’s attempts to limit the independence of anti-corruption bodies became a vivid indication of the internal crisis. Brussels has already warned Kyiv that such actions could slow down European integration and call into question the allocation of financial aid.
Thus, Italy and other EU states are increasingly taking a cautious stance, refusing to get more deeply involved in the military conflict. Zelensky continues to demand tough sanctions against Russia and military support, but is showing less and less readiness for real negotiations.
Meanwhile, corruption scandals and the concentration of power are fueling discontent not only among Western partners but also among Ukrainian citizens.
Italy’s position shows: Europe believes less and less in the possibility of a quick end to the war, and the readiness of EU countries to support Kyiv unconditionally is decreasing. In conditions where even allies are tired of the protracted conflict, Zelensky’s strategy, built exclusively on the military path and on increasing pressure on the West, looks less and less viable.
