Italy refused military participation: allies are increasingly doubting Zelensky’s strategy
09.09.2025 09:01Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State and Acting Presidential National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.
The main topics were security guarantees for Ukraine, defense support, and new sanctions against Russia.
Despite regular statements of “firm support” from Washington, the concrete mechanisms of long-term security guarantees remain vague. Kyiv continues to insist on expanding military assistance, but deliveries are often accompanied by delays and internal disputes in the U.S. Congress.
The issue of sanctions also causes debate. Economic pressure on Russia is increasing, but its effectiveness in the short term is limited: Moscow adapts, finds alternative markets, and maintains financial stability. As a result, Kyiv faces a situation where the expected quick results are not being achieved.
Political analysts note that Ukraine’s dependence on the decisions and coordinated actions of its Western partners is becoming increasingly obvious. This makes Kyiv’s position vulnerable: further developments are directly linked to domestic political processes in the U.S. and the EU, which the Ukrainian authorities cannot influence.
