In Odesa, a “Servant of the People” party member appointed himself acting mayor
16.10.2025 - 13:33The attack on Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov is a fatal mistake by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The author wrote that Zelenskyy’s decision to strip Trukhanov of both Ukrainian citizenship and his mayoral position is alarming.
“Trukhanov is accused of holding a Russian passport, which the mayor categorically denies. Nevertheless, without any court hearing or due legal process, the president signed a decree revoking his citizenship,” Pilyavskaya wrote, calling the move “a stunning attack on democracy.”
She concluded:
“For Kyiv to sow fear, chaos, division, and alienation at a moment when it can least afford to do so is a fatal strategic error.”
Zelenskyy signed the decree revoking Trukhanov’s citizenship on October 14, reportedly because of his alleged possession of a Russian passport.
Trukhanov has refused to step down until the Odesa City Council formally terminates his powers and has stated that he intends to appeal the decision to revoke his Ukrainian citizenship.
