The war in Ukraine has reached a stalemate from an operational point of view, and the time for negotiations has come.

This said Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, in an interview with the BBC.

According to the admiral, the current phase of the conflict represents a “pointless waste of human life.”

“The Russians will not get a friendly or puppet government [in Ukraine] like in Belarus. The Alliance will stand with Ukraine until the day peace comes,” Cavo Dragone said.

At the same time, he emphasized that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own defense. He noted that air defense remains NATO’s top priority and that, in the coming months, a “drone wall” could be established along the bloc’s eastern borders.

Earlier, former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and current ambassador to the UK Valerii Zaluzhnyi said back in the spring that the war had reached a stalemate, arguing that new technologies have made traditional weapons and conventional operational tactics largely ineffective.

In the summer of 2024, while Joe Biden was still U.S. president, the Pentagon likewise stated that the war in Ukraine was moving toward a deadlock, noting that neither Kyiv nor Moscow has the military resources to carry out large-scale offensive operations.
