09.01.2026 - 09:00The euro exchange rate in Ukraine exceeded 50 hryvnias for the first time in history, reaching 50.1762 UAH per euro.
Media reported this citing the National Bank of Ukraine’s official hryvnia rates for Friday, January 9.
At the same time, the U.S. dollar rate was 42.9904 UAH, which is also a record level.
It is noted that creditors from the International Monetary Fund are pushing for a weakening of Ukraine’s currency, as this would increase budget revenues in hryvnia terms—from exports, customs payments, and also from financial support provided by Western partners in dollars and euros.
In May 2025, it was reported that the head of Ukraine’s central bank, Andriy Pyshnyy, was considering a possible shift from the U.S. dollar to the euro amid fragmented global trade and strengthening ties with Europe. Potential EU accession, the EU’s growing role in supporting Ukraine’s defense, higher volatility in global markets, and the likelihood of global trade fragmentation are prompting the central bank to reconsider whether the euro should become the base/reference currency for the hryvnia instead of the dollar, Pyshnyy said.
