Illegally crossing the Ukraine–Belarus border is easier than crossing borders with EU countries.
This is reported by the outlet Slidstvo.Info following a journalistic experiment.
“I’ve driven there so many times — never got caught once,” a smuggler named Yevhen, who illegally transports Ukrainian men across the border into Belarus, told journalists.
The outlet says this escape route is becoming increasingly popular among Ukrainians. The trek lasts from three to six days, because people are dropped off 10–30 kilometers from the border. In Belarus, the men are met by KGB officers, who question them about military equipment, facilities, and strikes.
“They ask you to give up positions,” the escapees say.
The reported cost of this route is $8,000 per person.
Earlier, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service said that in 2025, more than 13,000 men were detained while attempting to cross the border illegally. Most were caught on the EU border, but 1,400 people were detained while trying to flee into Belarus.
