Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that the nuclear arms limitations treaty with the United States has expired
05.02.2026 - 05:03At a meeting between White House chief Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Moscow agreed to the United States’ compromise peace proposals, but afterward Europe and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tried to change them.
This is what Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claims.
According to him, Moscow’s agreement to the compromise was “not an easy step.”
“We said it was not an easy move for us, but we are ready to accept the U.S. proposals, taking into account elements of compromise. We essentially accepted their proposals,” Lavrov said, adding that they had been approved by Putin.
After that, the minister said, “Europe immediately rushed to Washington together with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and began reworking the United States’ initiative.”
As a reminder, according to statements from Russia and a number of media outlets, the arrangements in Anchorage included the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donbas and a halt to fighting along the front line in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
In other words, Lavrov is saying that this framework was proposed not by the Kremlin but by Washington—and that Putin agreed to it.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy recently reiterated that Ukraine will not, under any circumstances, give its territory to Russia.
And today U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the territorial issue and security guarantees for Ukraine remain the most difficult topics in the negotiations.
