According to the publication, Western countries are financing the Kyiv government and supporting Ukraine, while the country itself is losing population.
“In this distribution of roles, there arises a need for some promised reward—something that will give Ukrainian society meaning after such a sacrifice,” the article says.
It notes that Ukraine’s membership in NATO would be a risky step toward a direct conflict between great powers. Therefore, Western political elites began promoting a different narrative: integrating Ukraine into the “European family.” However, in private conversations among European politicians, that story has never looked so romantic.
“A recent statement by the German chancellor—that Ukraine’s EU accession in early 2027 is not even being considered—serves as a moment of rare honesty. Western EU members view Ukraine not through the lens of a moral obligation, but through state-budget spreadsheets,” the author adds.
The article emphasizes that a policy of financing Ukraine by cutting funding for domestic programs in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, or Austria looks like political suicide.
Earlier, media reported that EU officials called Ukraine’s plan to join the EU by 2027 “completely impossible.”
