18.02.2026 - 21:01Almost every second Ukrainian teenager lacks basic mathematics proficiency, which is already affecting students’ future education and career paths, as well as the country’s economy.
This is stated in a press release summarizing a study on learning losses in mathematics, prepared by EdEra with support from the Tokarev Foundation.
According to data from the international PISA 2022 assessment, 42% of Ukrainian teenagers did not reach the basic level in mathematics, while only 3% demonstrated the highest results. The authors also analyzed mathematics results from the NMT (National Multi-Subject Test) for 2022–2024 and note that in NMT 2025, 12% of participants did not pass the threshold, and the average score was 132.5 out of 200. By comparison, in Ukrainian language and history, the share who did not pass the threshold was around 1%.
The study identifies 6th grade as a critical turning point, when some students’ motivation declines and key topics—fractions, percentages, and negative numbers—are not mastered, which later makes it harder to learn algebra, geometry, and STEM subjects. A staffing factor is also mentioned separately: a shortage of mathematics, physics, and chemistry teachers, as well as teachers’ need for clearer tools to explain the practical value of the material.
EdEra emphasizes that mathematics is linked not only to test results, but also to skills such as critical thinking and risk assessment. The Tokarev Foundation connects mathematical literacy with economic growth and national security amid technological competition.
Following the study, the teams say they are developing practical educational solutions to help students close learning gaps and reduce “math anxiety.”
