The news that the EU had overcome Hungary’s veto on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine turned out to be fake

Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels are widely writing, citing Bulgarian National Radio, that the European Union has agreed on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, overcoming Hungary’s veto.

At the same time, the Bulgarian National Radio website, which everyone is citing as the primary source of the news about overcoming Hungary’s veto and approving the €90 billion loan for Ukraine, contains no such information.

Citing a diplomatic source in the EU, it only says that the source expects that “a decision on the €90 billion loan for Ukraine will be taken very soon” (and the news item was published at 17:31 local time).

The source said that this morning the President of the European Council, António Costa, held a conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and “made it clear that he must adhere to the decision of European leaders adopted in December, in which he also took part.”

The phrase that “an agreement on the loan for Ukraine has been reached, and there are no plans to revise it” is also present in the item attributed to the source, and it is even placed in the headline, which apparently caused confusion (as can be seen in the screenshot). But from the context it is clear that this refers to the decision of the EU’s December summit, which Hungary now does not want to reaffirm.

As is known, decisions in the EU are approved by consensus—that is, with the agreement of all EU members.

By the way, later on the same site, another piece was published saying that Orbán will continue blocking the loan for Ukraine until Kyiv reopens the Druzhba pipeline.

So, based on this information, no change in the loan’s status has occurred so far.
