Hungary’s election victor, Magyar, said that negotiations with Russia are necessary and that he has no intention of defending Kyiv’s interest
13.04.2026 - 10:01After Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat in the parliamentary elections, there are no longer any obstacles for the EU to finance Ukraine, and this could provoke a direct war between Europe and Russia.
This was written on X by Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
“Orbán lost the election. Now nothing stands in the way of the EU pouring in more billions to finance their war, which will most likely provoke a direct war with Russia. Not a good day for Europe and peace,” he said.
On April 12, parliamentary elections were held in Hungary, in which the opposition Tisza party led by Péter Magyar won. After 93.42% of the votes had been counted, Tisza was projected to receive 138 seats in parliament, while Fidesz received only 54. Orbán acknowledged defeat in the election and congratulated Magyar on his victory. The prime minister promised that Fidesz, while in opposition, would continue to serve the country.
Magyar said that Hungary’s new authorities “will have to” sit down at the negotiating table with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that Budapest will not be a friend of Moscow. He also promised that he would not represent Kyiv’s interests either.
