AfD in Saxony-Anhalt has adopted a radical platform: deportations, ending protection for Ukrainian refugees, and a course toward closer ties with Russia
13.04.2026 - 10:40Péter Magyar, who won the elections in Hungary, said that he will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including on energy supplies.
He said this in an interview with the Hungarian newspaper Népszava.
“We will have to sit down at the negotiating table with the Russian president. The geographic position of neither Russia nor Hungary will change. Our energy dependence on Russia will also remain. We will negotiate,” Magyar said.
At the same time, he added that he does not intend to engage in a friendly dialogue. He also noted that in this dialogue with the Russian side he does not wish to represent Ukraine’s interests.
“Nobody wants a pro-Ukrainian government in Hungary,” Magyar stressed.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is lifting its recommendation that its citizens refrain from traveling to Hungary “in connection with the conclusion of yesterday’s election campaign.” This was written on Facebook by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
“That election campaign, which unfortunately was filled with manipulations regarding Ukraine, is now behind us. This means that the heightened risks of provocations, because of which these restrictions were introduced, have also lost their urgency,” Sybiha noted.
According to him, Kyiv expects relations to normalize, and the election results “marked the defeat of the politics of blackmail and anti-Ukrainian propaganda.”
It is worth recalling that Politico wrote that Magyar does not have particularly warm feelings toward Ukraine, opposes supplying it with weapons, and is also against its accession to the European Union.
