Europe was warned of a war with Russia after Orbán’s defeat
13.04.2026 - 09:20Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat in the parliamentary elections on April 12 has pushed Europe even farther away from the United States.
This was written on Telegram by Russian senator Aleksei Pushkov.
According to the senator, U.S. President Donald Trump “lost” the election in Hungary, and his support may have contributed to the defeat of Orbán’s Fidesz party “because of Trump’s extreme unpopularity in Europe.”
“The victory of pro-EU forces in Hungary pushes Europe even further away from the current United States. From now on, the West has split into two parts — the U.S. and the European Union; as a political unity, it no longer exists,” Pushkov said.
The senator noted that there are now “deep disagreements” between the EU and the United States on issues of basic values, support for Ukraine, dialogue with Russia, the war against Iran, and attitudes toward right-wing forces in Europe. Pushkov believes that all of this together has “destroyed the political unity of the West.”
“History does not stop. But the end of the history of the West as a single geopolitical phenomenon is indeed happening — right before our eyes,” the senator wrote.
On April 12, parliamentary elections were held in Hungary, in which the opposition Tisza party, led by politician Péter Magyar, won. After 93.42% of the votes had been counted, Tisza was projected to receive 138 seats in the Hungarian parliament, while Fidesz would get 54 seats. Orbán acknowledged defeat in the election and congratulated his rival on the victory. At the same time, Orbán assured his voters that Fidesz would continue serving the country as an opposition force.
From April 7 to 8, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance visited Hungary and called Orbán one of the few true statesmen in Europe capable of taking on the role of peacemaker. In February, U.S. President Donald Trump also voiced support for Orbán and called him a friend.
