28.05.2026 09:04Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent U.S. President Donald Trump an urgent letter in which he reported a shortage of missiles for air defense systems and demanded that their deliveries be accelerated.
This was reported by the Kyiv Independent, citing sources.
In the letter, Zelensky stated that Ukraine relies “almost exclusively on the United States” when it comes to protection against ballistic missiles, and that the current pace of deliveries under the PURL program no longer matches the scale of the threat.
“When it comes to protection against ballistic missiles, we rely almost exclusively on the United States. The current pace of deliveries under the PURL program no longer corresponds to the reality of the threat we are facing. I am asking for your help in protecting Ukraine’s airspace from Russian missiles,” the Ukrainian president’s letter reads.
Separately, Zelensky asked for PAC-3 missiles for Patriot systems to be supplied to Kyiv, describing the shortage as extremely painful.
“There is hardly anything more painful for us than Patriot batteries without loaded missiles. I am asking for your help in protecting Ukrainian skies from Russian missiles,” the Ukrainian president wrote.
In the same letter, Zelensky claims that in the early hours of May 24, Russia launched two “Oreshnik” missiles: one fell on Bila Tserkva, the second on the occupied part of Donetsk region.
According to the Kyiv Independent, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, has already delivered the letter to Congress.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, commenting the day before on Moscow’s threats to intensify strikes on Kyiv in response to the attack on Starobilsk and make them systematic, said nothing about supplying Ukraine with air defense missiles and did not condemn Russia’s actions.
