Number of Ukrainians with temporary protection in the EU rises in June 2026

According to Eurostat data published on Wednesday, August 12, the number of Ukrainians with temporary protection in European Union countries increased by more than 24,000 people in June 2026 compared to May.

This was reported by Yevropeyska Pravda.

As of June 30, 2026, EU countries counted 4.41 million non-EU nationals registered for temporary protection under the mechanism created to provide refuge to Ukrainians. The increase compared to the end of May was 24,380 people, or 0.6%.

In June, the largest increases in temporary protection recipients were recorded in Italy (more than 4,100 people), the Czech Republic (more than 3,800), and Germany (nearly 3,000). An outflow of holders of this status was noted in Poland — more than 6,300 people. Belgium (35 people) and Ireland (15 people) follow in the next positions by a wide margin.

The largest number of Ukrainians with temporary protection is concentrated in Germany — more than 1.28 million people, accounting for 29.2% of the total EU figure. Poland is in second place with more than 960,000 (21.8%), followed by the Czech Republic with more than 390,000 (8.9%). In terms of share of their own population, the highest concentration of Ukrainians is observed in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Cyprus.

Ukrainian nationals remain the absolute majority among all holders of temporary status, making up 98.5%. Women among them account for 43.4%, adult men for 27%, and minors for 29.6%.

At the end of July, the European Union extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028. A new provision was also introduced: Ukrainian nationals of military age who arrive will be able to apply for the status only if they have no issues with their military registration documents.

Earlier, the Czech Republic reported that last year the country registered temporary protection for more Ukrainian men than women for the first time.
