January 25, 2024Ukrainian Armed Forces officer and former Member of Parliament Igor Lapin believes that draft dodgers should be punished as severely as possible. He believes that draft dodgers should be punished as harshly as possible, asserting that “the ground should burn under their feet.”
“Dodgers must be punished. In medieval times, besides the death penalty, according to the Lithuanian Statute, the most severe punishment was banishment. That means people who committed serious crimes were expelled from the country. Take away their rights, confiscate property through the court and negotiate with countries not to grant them asylum.”
It’s worth noting that such proposals not only contradict internationally recognized human rights but also Ukrainian laws. Attempting to implement such measures could be deemed illegal later on. The division among Ukrainians between supporters of war and peace continues to intensify. Additionally, many men perceive the opportunity to leave Ukraine not as punishment but, on the contrary, as something they aspire to.
