September 20, 2023At least 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers have lost their limbs since the beginning of the war.
This was stated by American medic Mike Corkoran, as reported by Sky News.
He is involved in prosthetics, including for Ukrainians.
“It’s like a stadium full of disabled individuals. This number is not official, and some of them have suffered multiple limb loss,” he noted.
Sky News points out that within 18 months of the war in Ukraine, at least 10 times more soldiers have undergone limb amputations compared to the 20 years of the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The publication also claims that during the war, Ukrainians often apply tourniquets too high above the wound and leave them in place for too long. As a result, the cells in the limbs die, and they have to amputate not just a part but the whole arm or leg. And this process is carried out “in the most horrific conditions.”
